Introduction to Ktima Sabanis

In 1980, Tasos Sabanis, a Mechanical Engineer, and his wife Eli created their own winery in Ritsona, Avlida, in order to make use of their vineyard and continue the family tradition in viticulture.

Their state-of-the-art winery is built at the heart of the viticulture zone of Aghios Ioannis, Avlida, 15 km from the town of Chalkida. The love and care that Tasos and Eli Sabanis have poured into this effort is manifest in every inch of the winery itself, from its exemplary crushing area with the “smart” pneumatic presses, the stainless steel double-wall vats and the maceration tanks, to the isobaric bottling line and the air-conditioned maturation cellar with the oak barrels where the wines “rest”. All this has resulted in the enterprise being awarded ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 22000:2005 HACCP certification, as well as the I.F.C. 4 (International Food Certificate), with very high marks.

The climate of the wider areas can be described as “Mediterranean”, with cold winters, hot summers, and long, dry autumns.

The soil is composed of clay and sand.

The vineyards are semi-alpine (350 to 450 m above sea level) and cooled by breezes from the South Evoikos Gulf. Today, the vineyards number 280, with 150 acquired at the end of 2007.

The grapes cultivated on the estate are a combination of indigenous and foreign varieties. The main white varieties are Roditis, Malagouzia, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, while the red ones are Syrah and Merlot.
